We can't give Otto Schmidt the Viking funeral that he deserves, so this will have to do. We say goodbye to a dear friend. I confess, I had not heard the news until today and that was after going to a Historicon in July. I guess I'm not on TMP that much these days. link V/R Walt |

Thanks for that well written eulogy Walt. I worked with him on the Gamer's Choice Awards, many years back and knew him to be intelligent, charming and full of new ideas. We will miss him. |

Walt; I just spit up my coffee after seeing this. That was the funniest (picture wise) and best tribute to Otto I could have ever imagined. When I saw one of his games and the tag on the one cavalry regiment "Reiters Of The Purple Sage" next to an artillery unit labeled "Battery Douracelle", I knew I was in Good Company… Sadly, we did not part on the best of terms. I wish I could have that back. For both of us. Eric |

A very nice tribute. My only exposure to him was here on TMP. Honestly I was hard pressed to figure him out. He sounds like he was a great guy, and will be missed in our community. |

@WaltOHara-- Thank you for the post; it gives me a greater appreciation for one I knew only from his written works. |

Sadly, we did not part on the best of terms. I wish I could have that back. For both of us Eric, FWIW, I saw Otto at Fall In. Even then he didn't seem like himself – I had an idea something was wrong. Then I started reading the posts that started all the nonsense and it confirmed (at least to me) that something was amiss. I'm throughly convinced that the heart condition affected his thinking (I saw the same behavior in my brother). Don't beat yourself up over things past. Look back at the good times and smile. |

Honestly I was hard pressed to figure him out. Otto was in our NJ gaming group years ago. I think he gamed with us once a month for about 3 years or thereabouts. His behavior was, at times, bewildering. I never had anything against Otto, but it got to the point where we would wonder if "Otto" or "Victor" (his middle name) would being showing up for game day. He would also make numerous false claims. For instance, he claimed that his father was a colonel in the Austrian Army during WW1. Otto claimed to have a PhD in history from Rutgers University--a claim easily debunked. He certainly was a character, who enjoyed the humorous side of gaming. |

"He (Otto) certainly was a character, who enjoyed the humorous side of gaming. True words. One of the great aspects of this hobby is the fascinating individuals it attracts. Otto occupies an honored place on that pantheon. I'm saddened to hear of his passing.
