"Throughout the 1830s, President Andrew Jackson ordered the forced removal of tens of thousands of Native Americans from their homelands east of the Mississippi River. This perilous journey to designated lands in the west, known as the Trail of Tears, was fraught with harsh winters, disease, and cruelty.

The name came to encompass the removal of all five tribes that occupied the southeastern United States. All tribes incurred thousands of deaths and all experienced the sorrow of being ousted from their ancestral homelands. Today, many historians view Jackson's actions as nothing short of ethnic cleansing…"

Though a very few managed to break from the forced march columns,while the guards weren't watching,or light out before they could be rounded up;and escape into places like parts of southern Kentucky and elsewhere, where there were fewer people to bother them.

One should always be very careful when judging historical events by 21st century standards but it's difficult not to agree that the trail of tears was an example of ethnic cleansing, comparable to some of the forced relocations instituted by Stalin and other regimes throughout history.

Eagle76: Agreed. It was a deplorable act. But don't be so quick to judge. In 100 years, almost everyone here will be called a racist, misogynist, warmonger (glorifying war with little toys? HORRIBLE!) and worse. No matter how "enlightened" you are now, the future will judge you harshly.
