I found the rules, Find,Fix and Strike on the Wargame Vault.
They are simple and yet fun, which is great for my two boys, 9 and 6, to have some fun with dad. Even lost my first two games vs them…loads of fun with them :)

But, I do have a question or two and hopefully someone on here has played them.

1- Spotting
It would seem that there is no actual measurement for spotting ships of different class sizes.
Example- Italian Cruiser Trento is Size Class 2 vs British BC Renown which is Size Class 1.

Anyone use a home rule for attempting to spot or limit ships that are smaller than a BB, BC or CV?

2- Penetration
On the Damage Charts, there is a column that says 'Pen?'
When the target ship has this happen on the Damage roll, what is the effect of the actual Pen?

3- Shooting
How I did this was determine first if the firing ship was able to actually Penetrate the target ship. Then we rolled.

If the firing ship's Armour Penetration Value is a point or two higher than the Targets Protection Factor, how does this affect the outcome of firing?

Light Guns. What is the Armour Penetration for them?
I went with AP 1 at Medium Range.

Thanks
Doug

I'm at work at the moment, will get you answers tonight.

Sounds good

While questions are being asked, I have a couple questions about searchlights.
- Is there a range limit for searchlights?
- If a ship is using a searchlight is it considered illuminated?

For Doug, here are my thoughts on your questions.
#2 – For Special Damage with a Y in the Pen column, the special damage only takes effect if the attacker penetration is equal to or greater than the target's protection factor. Otherwise it is ignored. If the target rolls a natural 1, you should always roll on the Special Damage table since most Special Damage hits do not require penetration.

#3 – There is no extra effect if the attacker's penetration is greater than the target's protection factor.

Light Guns Penetration – Light guns typically fall into the 3.9" to 5.1" range for most ships.

Sorry, real life got in the way last night so my answers were delayed, but Dave S has it right for 2 and 3

For Q11) I didn't want to differentiate to maintain the quick play nature of the rules. But its easy to house rule. One idea off the top of my head, reduce spotting distance to DD/FF and smaller by 25% of the prevailing visibility conditions

re searchlights: Yes, I did omit a couple of key things there. Searchlight maximum range I' set at 10,000 yards / 10". And ships using searchlights are themselves automatically illuminated
3) Agai

@daveshoe and David
Thanks for the replies.

I think I will add a house rule for cruisers and destroyers for spotting. If they haven't fired, a 25% reduction in spotting range sounds good to me. But if they fire, while outside that spotting reduction, they're spotted.
Searchlights- good to know. Have not done any night actions as of yet. We three boys have only had two battles when these questions, for me that is, popped up.
Light Guns- that info helps alot as well :)

However, I'm still confused about #2
#2- I think I was doing this part wrong. So some clarification would be good.
We would roll on the Damage charts to see what the effects were, regardless if a Natural 6 was rolled.
Eg: Conte di Cavour Italian BB fired at the British BC Repulse at Long Range. D6 roll of 5 + Main Attack Mod +4 (+/- mods). Repulse rolls D6 of 4. Add Defense Factor +3 (+/- defense mods). Calculated difference= Damage on Chart as per 'Shooting Results' page 16.
In this case, the damage was Light Damage.
As per the Shooting Results, we rolled a D6 on the Light Damage chart and got 5. Which has 'Y' in the Pen column.
Does the 'Effect' take place because of that Pen?

David, thanks for the searchlight information.

Doug, I think I see why there is some confusion.

On page 16, the rules say "Note the level of damage sustained and roll a d6 on the appropriate damage table below. Inflict the damage effect listed."

However, I think it should say "Note the level of damage sustained and inflict the damage effect listed."

Then you would check for any for any Special Damage per the rule on page 17. The Quick Play Sheet on page 48 also could cause some confusion since it says to check for Special Damage on a 6 on the attacker's die (instead of 1 on the target's die as stated in the page 17 rule).

For your example, Cavour's result is 9 (5 + 4) compared to Repulse's result of 7 (4 + 3) would result in light damage to Repulse, with no special damage.

If Repulse had rolled a 1, making the result 4 (1 + 3), then the hit would result in heavy damage and you would roll on the Heavy Damage Special Damage table.

Hopefully that makes sense.

That actually helps out alot. I kinda figured it was a Natural 1 after my last post as I read and re-read the Special Damage rule and saw the 6 on the play sheet, which I think the Natural 1 is better. Far too many games I've played in the past that a Natural 6 comes up alot. So having a Natural 1 is nice for a change.
But very brutal if you get the wrong roll on the HD or Crippled chart…as I found today. I ended up rolling on the HD chart and rolled that 1- Magazine hit…yeah…rolled that 6 and yeah…sad state for my BB, but the excitement from my oldest boy…so awesome :D

David Manley03 Aug 2019 11:04 p.m. PST

OK, so two amendments needed:

First is the line on page 16 that should say "Note the level of damage sustained and inflict the damage effect listed. If the defender]s die is a 1 roll on the appropriate damage table (see "special damage" below)"

Second it the note on the QPS that should say "1 on defender's die" rather than 6 on attacker's

DougEagle04 Aug 2019 7:10 a.m. PST

Sounds good.

Also, on the QPS, the AP chart has 14" then 15-18. Where as on page 16, shows 14-15, then 16-18 for AP.

Dave:

Any way to quickly determine which pages to reprint? With each new release (e.g. 1.1) it would be helpful if rules contained a page detailing which pages are changed, either from the original release, or even better, between releases.

Something like:
1.0 (Initial Release); 1.1 (Pages 3, 5, and 21 changed)

Since it's a PDF, my old standby of using the word processor to diff 2 versions doesn't work, unfortunately.
