I'm sure this has probably been covered before, but darned if I could find WHERE?

For "Black powder" and similar rules, what is the usual convention for basing dismounted cavalry? What size bases do you use, how many figures on them, and how many stands to the unit?

Also, for instance, if a "standard" mounted cavalry unit has only 12 figures, do you use 12 figures for your dismounted representation of it, too? Does that make it now a "small" unit on foot (12 models)?

Any help/advice appreciated.

Good question – I have been using the same number of dismounted as mounted, which is probably a little optimistic as 1 in 4 or 5 troopers would have been a horse holder

We do consider that dismounting changes a standard size cavalry unit to a small infantry unit

Thanks for the reply, Frederick! And what size of stands do you use for the dismounted unit? And are they 6 stands of 2, or something else?

Given the use of horse holders, usually about one soldier for every three to four, it makes sense for it to be a small unit when dismounted. We maintain the standard 20mm square sizes for the dismounted troopers; your choice to mount them individually or on 20mm x 40mm stands.

The beauty of BP is that basing matters almost not at all. Our current SYW game features figures singly mounted on 20mm squares, 1" squares.20mm and 1" squares, some mounted 4 per 1 x 2" stand, some mounted in 8's etc. etc.
