Considering in combat, contact was never constant but more often a series of shouting and stare down with many yards separation. reserves and second or third lines would always be able to move to the front line after the lead line's feinting rushing "charge" forward which intended to but failed to break the the defender's will by intimidation. Balking chargers fall back to their starting point with the second line acting as a shield as they file back through. This probably was automatic in looser formations and didn't even require commanders to order it. Like the soldiers with gunpowder, the actual desire to go Mano a Mano was rare to find. Combat between units was always more a psych out then a blood letting. Most soldiers don't wish to risk themselves any more they had to. Real blood letting usually occurred in the pursuit phase when cohesion was lost and individuals are run down. |
