"The American War of Independence (or is it the American Revolution?) has always been a bit of an interest although lately it has definitely caught my imagination…I've recently bought some figures to get started on (although they are still languishing in their box, unassembled) and I've been reading Christopher Hibbert's history of the war. So when my friend Andrew proposed trying a game of 1777-Year of Decision I was very keen. This was a game released via Strategy & Tactics magazine, something I've never really looked at although I've seen copies in wargames shops like Orcs Nest…."

My $.02 USD,

I have been learning and playing this game with a gaming buddy, once a week for the past month. I have read the rules completely x3. That said, it is obvious that I have at least a fair plus understanding of this game.

In my opinion it is a good game, but not a superior one. Once played several times, I don't think that it will have a lot of replay.
My main reason for this is that it is quite hard for the British to achieve his objectives. Fort Montgomery can hold the British up for quite some time. The optional victory conditions do help balance the game a bit.
Another problem is the random event table. The odds are that the Indians under St. Leger's command will be gone by turn one or two.
I do think that this simulation would make a good start of a campaign miniatures game. However, in my opinion 'We the People' or 'Washington's War' would do a better job.

Sincerely,
