You were asked – TMP link

As has been pointed out:

Both spent a large part of their career fighting in Spain, and then topped off their career by defeating the second best general of their time in a Super Bowl.

Who was the better general?

45% said "Scipio Africanus"
30% said "Wellington"

MajorB31 Jul 2019 1:34 a.m. PST

I'd like to see him try …

Cornelius31 Jul 2019 4:46 a.m. PST

Obviously Scipio Cornelius Publius Africanus

4th Cuirassier31 Jul 2019 6:21 a.m. PST

Scipio has the word "anus" hidden in his name, so clearly Wellington was the better man.

bilsonius31 Jul 2019 10:47 a.m. PST

The correct order is Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus, unless he's being played by Russell Crowe, whose most famous character can't even get his own name right…

Mike Petro31 Jul 2019 11:10 a.m. PST

Hand to hand combat would be better, as they were both military genius. Scipio's gladius and shield versus Wellington's spontoon and pistol.

JimDuncanUK31 Jul 2019 11:59 a.m. PST

Wellington would have declined any attempt to attack an opposing general as he had more important things to do.

4th Cuirassier01 Aug 2019 1:17 a.m. PST

@ bilsonius

Russell Crowe, whose most famous character can't even get his own name right…

Ooo, did that film suck a55. Not only did he not know his own name, he also didn't know the gender of Rome, so "Roma victor" should have been "Roma victrix". Then there's the missing pilum volley and a general fighting hand-to-hand and the waist-high corn planted in equally spaced rows by a seed drill (not invented for another 1,600 years) and the fire arrows and the white unpainted statues and the stirrups and the chromed sword blades….

As a lot of these polls; totally stupid!

Condottiere02 Aug 2019 2:56 p.m. PST

As he should.

MichaelCollinsHimself06 Aug 2019 11:29 p.m. PST

Wellington beat Napoleon in a major decisive land battle, whereas Scipio didn`t.

As I said in the poll,
You don't have a Zama Station or beef Scipio, And the capital of New Zealand isn't Africanus.
Nor do you put on your scipios when it's raining.

4th Cuirassier08 Aug 2019 4:05 a.m. PST

@ Gunfreak

All very good points for us to reflect on as we sip our Hannibal brandy and listen to Abba warbling "Zama…how does it feel when you won the war".

Those are just islands. Scipio gets a continent :) Thought I would rather have Beef Wellington. If there is an Italian dish named Scipio it probably doesn't have meat in it.

I'm sure they had a group singing Scipio's praises but I think it was lost when the Ostrogoths moved the capital to Ravenna.

"Scipio gets a continent "

But the continent didn't get Scipio…

Kenntak09 Aug 2019 3:27 a.m. PST

Both generals were great, but the Italian national anthem speaks of wearing the helmet of Scipio Africanus. Is Wellington mentioned in any national anthem? :) I'd go with Scipio, more dynamic on the offense.

MichaelCollinsHimself09 Aug 2019 4:09 a.m. PST

Wellington was on the reverse of lots of £5.00 GBP notes once…

"I'd go with Scipio, more dynamic on the offense."
I'm sure the French at Salamanca and Vitoria were relieved about that?

"Wellington was on the reverse of lots of £5.00 GBP GBP notes"

He always did favour a reverse slope pos…

… I'll get me coat.

MichaelCollinsHimself10 Aug 2019 10:48 a.m. PST

Look, anyone could have taken Hannibal Barca at Zama… I genuinely think he must have had a very bad head cold or something that day.

bilsonius10 Aug 2019 3:30 p.m. PST

At least Hannibal didn't have piles of excuses like Napoleon…

MichaelCollinsHimself11 Aug 2019 11:06 p.m. PST

Scipio/Napoleon, Hannibal/Wellington, Vanilla/Cookie Dough, Pizza/Tag-Bol,… can you give us another five minutes to choose?
