Has anybody tried a D8 or D10 when playing Bolt Action? I'm thinking it would make those weapons that shoot a single die a little more effective, speeding up the game.

So are you increasing the to-hit percentages for everything? That really would speed up the game. Maybe not in a good way.

The new edition will be d10 based I understand

We've been playing about with a D12 version for a whiule – speeds things up if – like us – your usual games are at company rather than platoon level.

Warlords of Erehwon is d10. WoE evolved from Gates of Antares which evolved from Bolt Action.

I think the d10 works.

So I understand this, if the rules state you need to roll a 6 to hit on a d6, you use a d8 or a d10 for a 6 or better?

uglyfatbloke30 Jul 2019 3:51 p.m. PST

Our plan is to use D12 for everything….all we need is the tie to hammer it into shape. I've been saying that for nearly a year.

I find that a die greater than D6 will give more realistic statistical spread.
A D20 would be best to allow for close percentile adjustments.
1/6 is only about 17%.
Armor penetration would also benefit.
But isn't the point of Bolt Action to be a beginner, simplistic game with WW2 "flavor"

Wait, so you think Bolt Action is too slow?.

UPDATE OK we played with a D8. 1500 pts of early war Germans vs 1250 pts of Brits. Germans advancing needing to leave table with more units then they lose. We changed none of the rules, numbers required by die roll. Only change was no shots allowed that exceeded 8, so no super 8's.
Results: morale checks unbalanced game. Rolling 2 D8, with original morale vales tough. Add pins in and they fail to activate a lot. Also morale checks for 50% casualties in an attack hard to pass, units run off. Two players were extremely experienced with BA. Tournament experienced. 3rd player casual player probably has played in 3 to 4 dozen games last 3 years. Two experienced players didn't like d8s, casual player did like them. Was a fun game.

We stuck with D6 for morale.

Well its a very good idea – of course you need to adjust morale numbers etc. but the concept is excellent.
