Anyone actually play this rpg? The adventure modules look dopey. How does it play compared to D&D or Pathfinder or Basic Fantasy RPG? Is it a serious game or more to just have a good laugh? |

I've looked at the Free RPG Day module and it looked interesting to me. Magic has side effects to the caster was one of the things I thought was interesting. |

It is a great game, if you enjoy the wilder, darker antecedents of D&D. It is sort of like B/X D&D with a few modern mechanics tacked on, with a gonzo spell system and religious patron system that is very evocative of the chaos and chaotic nature of magic and religion in classic fantasy. Definitely not in the "high fantasy" tradition of Dragonlance and such. |

Love it; don't get attached to your character. Haha. Magic is so well done. The more magic you use, the more your body and mind get ‘corrupted'. And dieties pay attention to what their priests are doing. Don't bug them for stupid The rules encourage all die rolls in the open by the DM. No fudging. Not every 1st level guy is going to run into 1st level monsters. It's up to the characters to know when to fight and when to run. People die, get used to it. Lotsa fun, Steve |

I echo the above two posts. DCC is my favorite version of the d20 engines, though 5e bounded accuracy is also great. The spell system is cool, variable effectiveness, your fireball can fizzles or level city blocks. Patronage is a cool way to add spice to your character. If you like the more codified rules and combat mechanics of a Pathfinder vs. free styling DM (such as the apocalypse engine) this might not be your game. I will always gladly play DCC. Chris |

Another voice for the echo chamber: DCC is really fun as is its Gamma-World-Style post-apocalypse sibling game Mutant Crawl Classics. What love the most is their take on classic "Vancian" magic. You must roll each time to use the spell and consult it's respective table, the higher the roll, the more powerful the effect. You only forget the spell if you fail so you can cast multiple times so long as you rolls are lucky. You magic-user can even temporarily sacrifice attributes (i.e. "spellburn") to increase their spell's success. As others have stated, fumbles (i.e. a straight roll of "1") results in both spell failure and "corruption" which builds up over time. |

Thanks for the reviews. Seems in line with what research I have done. I'm glad I started this thread because I now know what "Vancian" magic is. And I'm an old AD&D player who had never heard of Jack Vance. So thanks. |

@USAFPilot—you must go read the Dying Earth books by Vance. They are quite good and quite clearly a heavy influence on Gary Gygax. Anything by Poul Anderson aa well. |

The 'character funnel' concept is particularly inspired in my mind. You make up 4 mooks per player (0 level character) and run a very low level dungeon. Casualties abound. The folks who make it will level up to a 1st level character. You end up with halfling haberdashers, and human gong farmers attempting to fend off wolf attacks with the expected gratuitous casualties. |
