Hey everyone, I was listening to a recent podcast by WS&S where they had a speaker talk about medieval retinues, and how the modern gamer likes to distinguish unit types, archer, man at arms etc, independently, whereas the likelihood is that, outside of set piece battles, retinues would have fought as a singular entity. As such it left me wondering whether there are any rules out there that reflect this style of force composition? I've been thinking of making a demonstration game of the second action of the Battle of Valmont, and didn't want to run it at Lion Rampant scale, but I don't know any rules that aren't then of a much larger scale. Any ideas where I could go, or should I just write some rules myself and make the demo game truly unique? |

I would THINK you are looking for rules where figures move and fight as units, with several units per side, but combat factors take into account the armament of the individual figures making up each unit. Am I correct you want a scale of one "unit" to equal one retinue, with your army on the tabletop being made up of a number of units? |

Knights and Knaves is a system that gives different figures stats based on troop type and equipment. There is a range within each class so not all bill armed serjeants are identical. free download from hisentco.com |

YogiBearMinis, you are spot on. Jlundberg, I'll go give it a look, thank you! |

An old system that is worth looking into is Knights and Magick, an old Heritage set of rules. Old School but holds up well. You could also just use Lion Rampant with likely little modifications necessary, with each "unit" having a mixture of figures and thereby modify its combat values. |
