Just finished painting my SYW Banal Grenzregiment nr.1 and based them. Tried a new wash, Vallejo Black Wash to "black line" the figures. Sprayed with gloss coat, let it dry, black washed them, let that dry, sprayed them with Testor's Dull Coat. It left them ALL with a fine dusty looking finish! I'm BUMMED, does anyone have a good idea, aside from a full redo, to remedy this little FUBAR? |

Let them dry and then try respraying the dull coat again in different conditions (lower humidity etc.). Has always worked before. |

As above, also make sure you shake the dullcoat paint can thoroughly. |

I've had luck with brushing on a clear gloss polyurethane (I used Minwax), letting that dry and then respraying with the dull coat . I no longer spray on the dull coat when humidity reading is over 50. |

Happened to me like that too. I resprayed with Gloss Coat (under optimal conditions). Then when it dried sprayed again with Dull Coat. Humidity seems to be a huge factory. And like Bill said, shake that can till the cows come home! |

I second what PzGeneral said. Have had it happened to me and it took care of the problem. I would also test spray the dull coat on something else first, I have had a bad can of dull coat before. |

Ditto PzGeneral. And I feel your pain – it was a truly horrifying experience. Now, if someone could only figure out an easy way to correct when I grab the primer instead of the sealer. (Yeah, happened once). |

Same happened to me some time ago. I varnished the whole figure with Future (Gloss Varnish) and when dry most of the bumps had gone. Good luck. Tony |

Humidity or being too close to the figures when spraying are 2 problems I have learned to avoid, through experience. |

Yes, I too wish life had an 'undo' button sometimes! |

Don't fret. Let them dry completely and spray them again. It's a miracle!! |

All of the above suggestions are great and I am sure you will solve your immediate problem. However, the whole problem can be avoided by using Winsor & Newton Professional Matt Spray Varnish. I have used it with no problem regardless of the temperature or the humidity. Some idea of how great it is: Temperature in the 40s F – dried flat. NO clouding or dusty appearance. Temperature in the low 90sF – dried flat. NO clouding or dusty appearance. Humidity 92 per cent – dried flat. NO clouding or dusty appearance. Thick coat – dried flat. NO clouding or dusty appearance. Thin coat – dried flat. NO clouding .or dusty appearance Sprayed clear gloss (Krylon or Rustoleum) at 1:30 pm and W/N Matt at 4:00 pm, same day, – dried flat. NO clouding or dusty appearance. It is also much cheaper than Dullcote. Much larger container. Here is where you can get it online. link Here is a posting I did a while back on it with some concurring recommendations. At that time I was mainly writing about drying flat, but it has also never clouded on me. link Tom |

I no longer spray on the dull coat when humidity reading is over 50. Humidity seems to be a huge factory (sic) I know what you meant. And as for Garryowen, I am going to see if I locate that and keep it near my work shop. My "work shop" is a corner in my unheated and un-air conditioned garage. Oh, and did I mention I live in Florida? No heat, or humidity problems here? Right? Right? Thank you all very much for all the useful hints and assistance. BTW I think the temp was in the high 80s and the humidity was not much lower. |

shake that can till the cows come home! They did, and they were DELICIOUS!!!! |

I have yet to experience one of these incidents that I could not correct later on with another application. It sure will ruin your day though! |

Based on Tom's (Garryowen) experience I bought 2 cans of the WN sealer. I stopped using Dullcote years ago other than the brush on bottles. Didn't dry flat enough. |
Wolfshanza | 26 Jul 2019 11:44 p.m. PST |
Yep, gave up on dullcote and went to WN matte sealer. |

The damn thing is I now remember that I already had a can of Krylon Matte sitting up there on the self. To paraphrase Gene Wilder, "Damn your eyes Igor" I know, I know, it's pronounced "I" gore. |

Wow! it worked, may need a light second application but the dusty finish has mostly disappeared. Thanks again to all, it sure beats repainting the whole lot. |

I use the brush on testors Dullcote lacquer now… I'll never spray again. |
von Schwartz | 28 Jul 2019 4:22 p.m. PST |
Used to use brush on, switched to spray, I didn't notice any discernable difference except spraying was faster. BTW, I discovered my problem. I didn't realize I had two cans of Testor's Dull Coat. Guess what?? One was older than my granddaughter, 13 years. You know the rest of that story. (smile) |
