I read a quote somewhere and scribbled it down, but now can't remember where I saw it and who – if anyone – said it. "The capture of this hill is worth 10,000 men" Remark by a French General, Western Front 1916 "Generous bastard, ain't he?" Remark by the General's first assault battalion commander Also, I keep seeing this attributed to various people, including Otto von Bismark, but this seems most likely: 'Talleyrand, Bonaparte's Foreign Minister and that it ran: "… My Lord, you can do anything you like with bayonets, except sit on them… ".' Any thoughts on sources here? |

A quick google gives a variety of possible sources, and variations on the exact quote, possibly because only one of the potential originators was an English speaker. So the list I found was: Talleyrand, Napoleon himself, Thomas Hardy, Otto von Bismarck, and Boris Yeltsin. The latter with a rather nice version which goes something like ‘You can build a throne out of bayonets, but you cannot sit on it for long'!' Any more takers? |

The interesting thing about the bayonets quote, if said by Tallyrand, is the meaning of the quote – that Napoleon can conquer by force of arms but he couldn't rule that way. |
