I recently reviewed a book about the Biafran War of the 1960s. TMP link To those of my generation, the first thing which "Biafra" brings to mind is pictures of starving children. However, the ground war did involve an interesting variety of troops and tactical situations. One side had a large, plodding army lacking in officers/command, with troops that were poorly motivated and often high; the other side showed boldness and motivation, but lacked supplies and were often starving, and had the support of mercs who ran the gamut from awful to dashing. On a scale of 0 to 10, what is your interest in gaming the Biafran War on the tabletop? |

I bought TFL's African War rules "B'Maso" (actually a set of modifications for IABSM and TW&T) when they first came out. I thought that some of the Wind of Change Wars would be interesting to do. My primary interest was the Belgian Congo and Rhodesia, but Biafra looked interesting as well. The entire project fell apart before I ever bought any figures. I did some reading on the wars before I made any purchases, and rapidly decided I wanted nothing to do with a serious refight of those conflicts. I think for these, Peter Pig's AK-47 Republic is probably the best way to go, what with its tongue-in-cheek fictional Africa. Of course, by using those you preclude any straight historical refights, so I guess the short answer to the question is no, which would be 0. I might play if someone else provided everything, so call the interest level a 1 or 2. BWW |

Yes, if I could figure out how to game it correctly. |

Easy, fill the table with starving women and children, and government troops armed with Russian and BAOR equipment. Maybe a couple of rebels armed with Lee Enfields or a Bren. No!

When people game conflicts, I don't think they want to the game atrocities. There should be plenty of "normal" combat to game in that war. I don't have any interest in collecting the figures, but I'd play the game if someone put it on. I guess that comes out to around a 5. |

AK47 comes close enough for most of that. |

He set out for Biafra, but through ‘66 and ‘7, they fought the Congo War, which is far from Biafra.* It should be a pretty easy conversion. Just find a Thompson gunner in any warm weather gear, and have van Owen blow off his head. Paint it up, and you're done. *Being hired to fight in Biafra and ending up helping the (Bantu-speaking) Congolese by battling the Bantus to their knees makes about as much sense as killing a man in Reno (Nevada), just to watch him die, and then being stuck in Folsom Prison (a state prison in California). Someone apparently edited critical connecting information out of the lyrics. |

If you are just playing firefight scenarios … it would be just like any other game. AFAIK Genocide generally never comes in to play in any games I know of. |

@Legion 4: You've never played Starship Troopers, then? "Bugs, Mr. Rico! Zillions of 'em!" |

LOL !!!!! Yes I loved the old AH SST game ! And as the SST, I enjoyed committing genocide on all those Skinnies & Bugs ! Although I guess you can call it genocide on two non-existent Sci-fi alien species … |
Oberlindes Sol LIC | 03 Aug 2019 10:10 p.m. PST |
I'm not even sure it was genocide with the Skinnies. With the Bugs, though, I think both sides were trying to completely eliminate the other side. |
