…In a pair of tweets, SOUTHCOM wrote that a "Venezuela SU-30 Flanker ‘aggressively shadowed' a U.S. EP-3E aircraft at an unsafe distance July 19, jeopardizing the crew & aircraft."…

I still don't understand why our recon birds aren't escorted.

If the don't have the range, or can't for other reasons, at least give them Aim-9Xs for self-protection.

Venezuela is being quite the playground bully, really typical 'dictatorship-in-trouble' behavior. They are also trying to 'acquire' by threats and bluster most of one of the coastal republics which theoretically may have oil, but doesn't have much more than a Police force in the way of defences.

We're still operating under the playbook that an unarmed aircraft in international airspace can't be a threat that justifies a stupid response.

Apparently some people still haven't got the memo.

If Venezuela shoots down an unarmed military aircraft in international waters, then they CLEARLY show themselves as the "bad guy" in this. If the recon aircraft is escorted, that sends the signal that the US is taking a more aggressive, provocative position, & may make it MORE likely that both sides start shooting at each other. Yes, this does rely a lot on common sense & Venezuala's knowledge that if the US becomes serous about it, we can take apart their military & eliminate the current government with a very high degree of likely success. It's still a dangerous game no matter how it is carried out…

I'm shocked that any of their aircraft can still fly! Most of the infrastructure in the country has been neglected and/or abused for so long that they're barely able to produce electricity, most of the oil fields aren't functional, hospitals are out of medicine, and so on. Trying to whip up national fervor is about the only thing they have left.

I suspect the recent Russian visits to Venezuela have included some support to get a few planes flyable to prop up the government's image.
