I've wanted to do modern skirmish gaming forever, and am slowly putting together all the needed bits. Rules-wise I've got all the relacent Force on Force books, plus the old Chain of Command modern beta . This post is instead about buildings.

I picked up a set of 7 of what I'd consider "stereotypical Middle Eastern buildings". Tan/brown boxes with a grainy, sand like finish. Recessed roofs where figures can stand, one with a done. Mostly 1 story with a couple 2 story and a single tall one.

Yet, as I read more about the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, I am wondering where these buildings are actually accurate to use? Patrols in Afghanistan, I'd imagine? I'd thought I could use them for semi-urban Iraq stuff but I'm starting to think not. I should probably build some courtyards to turn them into compounds?

Any good sources of 28mm Urban buildings for Fallujah fighting? I'm thinking of this set link and 3d printing them myself.

I think that a lot of these would work. They're not much different than what you describe as having, but there are some more modern looking buildings and some compound style set ups

I have this set and think it is rather good for the more urban areas. It actually needs more rural type buildings, IMO. :)

I've only printed things like trucks, garbage bins, generator, etc. from it so far.

These look good but big buildings take up a lot of room

I think you are on the right track with making 'compounds' to place the simple buildings in. Just make a level 'ground' and add walls & a gate. Loose trees such a a palm or two, the odd Polar and a fountain or pool – gardens are very popular and the fences stop people stealing your fruit or chopping down your tree for firewood (which why everywhere else is dust & sand). The bigger/taller buildings tend to be towards the middle of bigger towns – closer to the mosque & market – and families rebuild over the generations to keep all the relatives in the one spot while new comers settle on the outskirts in simple sheds and work their way up.

I can highly recommned the 3d printing set you linked to. Jens Najewitz does an excellent job of designing functional buildings that build quickly and look good.

See Matakishi's articles on his Afghanistan buildings for 28mm Force on Force and Modern Crossfire.

You may be buying models versus scratch building but his approach to basing and arrangement will still give you some guidance.
