We conducted a scenario based on the approximate terrain of a part of cold war Germany. Russians vs Brits. With the FV438 and the Charm gun Chieftains the damage done to the Russians was enormous. More than sufficient to indicate the Russians really would need a large artillery contingent. We estimated possibly 50 or so guns on a couple of thousand yards width of valley. This would swing the pendalum the other way and have the Russians winning with if not ease, with reasonable certainty. Now the counter to the Russians would be significant co0unter battery fire and action by aircraft acting in that role. No really I don't want to model all the steps in a sophisticated counter battery system that is a game in of itself. So does anybody have data on how long it would be before the allies counter battery could begin and how effective it would be and over what timescale. Effectively then I could write a very simple timeline for the write down of Russian artillery as a function of time, quick simple and effective. |

My guess is that in some cases, counter-battery fire would be returned before the initial rounds fired by the opposition hit the ground, if they are ready for action. It needs to be very quick to keep the opposition from "shooting and scooting", thus avoiding effective return fire. |

No really I don't want to model all the steps in a sophisticated counter battery system that is a game in of itself. So does anybody have data on how long it would be before the allies counter battery could begin and how effective it would be and over what timescale. Effectively then I could write a very simple timeline for the write down of Russian artillery as a function of time, quick simple and effective. While I don't have any hard data, I do like the system Flames of War used in their Pacific books, which worked just like the air support mechanics. You would have a dice pool that depended on amount of support you were given, each call for fire used up one die from the pool. There was another pool that gave you the ability to counter said attack, which also lost one die for each attempt to use the pool. It gave both players a chance to have an impact. |

It depends on the time frame. By the time I was in, the late 80s, we could have counter battery fire shells in the air before their fire had impacted. We could even do it with mortars. |

That is true Dn. And today it is even more high tech. E.g. IDF's Iron Doom and the Vulcan Phallax ground mounts in A'stan, etc. Both can intercept incoming AFAIK, rockets, mortar rounds, etc. But I do not know what the TOT for all this to happen. And even take it to the game board. I'd think it would be something like the mechanics of Opportunity Fire … ? |
