The discovery of cannabis pollen near a Viking settlement in Newfoundland raises the question of whether the Vikings were smoking or eating pot while exploring North America…

"Raises the question" – that might be overstating it.

I am weary of "journalism" that consists of a banal observation followed by a very exciting conclusion with nothing in between. In this case the observation couldn't even be said to *suggest* the conclusion.

Only thing we know is that Vikings liked to party, we still do judging by the drunk teens passed out on the pavements in the cities or in the gardens of houses.

Warspite118 Jul 2019 3:01 p.m. PST

Well they did get to the Middle East (Byzantium) so it is not impossible.
Just rather unlikely!

Hemp has been known in Europe and Asia going back to the days of ancient Egypt and was used to elicit hallucinations . It played an important part in many religions. Steppe tribes used hemp for vision quests in closed tents much the same way as the American First nations.

Hemp is a variety of the cannabis genre so finding it seeds in any are is not surprising Hemp has a ower concentration of THC.

I know nothing about pot, but isn't cannabis grown from the hemp plant, and isn't hemp used for making rope? Could it be they grew it first and foremost to aid in sailing?

Redblack..no doubt it was used for loads of things, but not to elicit hallucinations; euphoria, sleep and a desire for chocolate ? Yes. hallucinations? No.
