I have 6mm French, Prussian and Russian armies and have always undercoated in black. However, I am currently raising a British army and do not feel that a black undercoat will work as effectively under red. I am interested to know what others have done to provide some depth/shadow to red at this scale. I would like to experiment, but first it seems sensible to seek advice from those who have gone before.

Two coats. First coat is a light bone or pale tan, second coat is red.

If you use the right paint it will be fine.

All the red on those figures is done over a black undercoat.

If you use Cel Vinyl medium red and then their red or vermilion, depending on whether you are doing officers or line it will work great.

Alternately you can use one of the GW base coats, like Khorne Red, and then Evil Suns Scarlet, and it will do the same thing.

I do all my redcoats regardless of scale or size in brick red as a basecoat.

Use a grey primer instead of black.

In 6mm? Black primer, damp brush white, then red.

I undercoat all my figures regardless of scale with white enamel. People don't seem to realise that all paint is translucent so the base colour affects the final apparent hue. In fact the smaller the figures the lighter the shade you need to use.

To make red pop I usually use a rust brown undercoat (over my usual black base coat).

Thanks to everyone for the replies/suggestions; maybe I'll post my efforts!

Delort – I start with a dark flesh over the black undercoat, hands and faces and a base for the red. It gives a nice bright finish and if you leave some black showing also gives you the depth of shade.

Here is my old 6mm Painting and basing guide, step by step tutorial of a Baccus 6mm British infantry battalion. Hope this helps?

Thanks Grambo; I enjoyed the guide though it seems you finish your units a lot quicker than I do!
