and their Native American opponents?

I was actually hoping to find 20mm or 1/72nd figures for these, since I prefer that size/scale for non-skirmishing games, but I've not found much.

Since it looks like I'll be shifting scales, whose figures seem to have the best bang for the buck? I know that, historically, the US Cavalry fought dismounted, those will be probably the dominant type of figure.

Oh, also, do any figure lines include horse holders?

Thanks!

For the best bang for the buck, I would check out Old Glory. They have a "Warpaint" range focused on the Indian Wars, in 25/28mm.

For 20mm try Newline designs, they have a Little Bighorn range. For 28mm I use Foundry, Old Glory, and Artizan.

Well there are plenty of ranges to choose from! I'm sure one of these will have suitable figures…

Waterloo 1815 miniatures have Indians and US Cavalry in 1/72. Can send you pics if you like (of the cavalry)

Dixon, let's not forget Dixon in 28mm

Foundry's 28mm range is very good, but no horseholders – I use Perry ACW figures with some headswaps instead.

But I'd be tempted, if starting again, to go for 15/18mm using Blue Moon and Minifigs, to better capture the wide open spaces, loads of tipis and swarms of Sioux warband

Thanks for the suggestions.

Now to do some shopping.. :)

Lance at the Galloping Major has come out with some dismounted US cavalry figures which are great looking. He is currently working on the mounted range figures and when they are available they will be the best figures out there.

You might check out Legends in Time. They carry (parts of) 3 lines of US Cavalry. I prefer the Blue Moon 18mm US Cavalry figures. Skip carries the mounted and dismounted packs of both cavalry and plains indians, but does not regularly carry the rest of the War Paint line (but will special order those for you.)

Oh, forgot to mention about horseholders. In the 18mm range, there are two options, Blue Moon has sets of horseholders, one with kepis (union) and one with slouch hats. Each set includes 2 horseholders and 8 horses and runs about $10 USD while AB (which I think is another name for Battle Honors) that have sets with (I think) 16 horseholders and 16 held horses. I think I've paid about $33 USD each for a couple of sets, but those came painted from an ebay seller named 40andliving, (or something like that.) Or you can get individual horseholders and held horses for $.67 USD each plus shipping from AB directly. Both of these sorses' figures come with sabers so for the 1876 campaign, I have to shave off the sabers with an exacto knife.

Thanks, viking and Stephen. I'll look through both sites. I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to go with, and the holidays right now are not making it any easier, as my hobby space has been packed up and relocated to the garage in order for the Christmas tree to be placed in the living room.
