We played a scenario that had early war Germans attacking Russians entrenched on a series of hills. Germans had to cross an open area with some +1 cover to take the hills. Each side had 1300 pts. Germans predictably were slaughtered. Question, in that type of scenario what point ratio would make that scenario at least plausible for the Germans? At 1:1 pts there was no chance. Both sides had pre-bombardment, on board arty/ air strike. Germans a StugIII. Russians a 47mm ATG plus AC with 47mm gun & assorted infantry. Should the Germans have had more points? If yes how many more than the Russians? |

I'm assuming this was a Bolt Action game? We do a lot of games 1:1 and the attacker wins – must have specific objectives for the game. The attacker always chooses where to concentrate and attack – the defender usually has to spread out and defend the whole table edge or be outflanked. Advantage goes to the attacker. |

Regardless of rules, when I do a scenario I have the attacker outnumber the defender 3:2. But the attacker can concentrate and get local odds of 3 or 4 to one. Defenders without reserves usually lose. |

Mostly we give the attacker a numerical advantage but that might not be reflected in points since we use historical forces and are very 'scenario driven'. |

My experience with bolt action specifically is that anything above a 10-15% bonus to one side will balance it too far to the larger force's advantage. |

Probably depends upon whether you need to wing against/eliminate the defenders, or just get one figure, vehicle, or unit off the back side of the defender's side of the table as well. |

In Flames of War where both sides have objectives, 1:1 can work. In other game systems I have given the attacker up to 3:1 odds depending on the goal and tabletop situation. Both sides in the open with no cover vs. the rocky craps of Italy are a factor. As suggested, 3:2 seems very reasonable. |
