I found those a while back, Disaster…I was wondering where the Aus-NZ jobbies were (not on the Aus Memorial page). Thanks though (as there are a lot of goodies on the Army Press site). |

The Saratoga Staff Ride suffers from the ongoing lack on consistency and consensus as the three most recent books on the battle. I have spent much time over the last two weeks trying to reconcile the narratives of the battle of Freeman's Farm as presented by authors Ketchum, Logusz and Luzader without complete success. The disparities in the narrative range from which units were on the field at what times, where those units were deployed, where Arnold was during the battle, etc. A common repeated error, that is also included in the staff ride, is that Hamilton's column crossed the "Great Ravine". Hamilton's column crossed "a" ravine on their way to deploying north of Freeman's Farm, but never crossed the Great Ravine, but you would be hard pressed to understand that from either the narrative or the maps, which leave much to be desired in all three books. |

Thanks, Oldnorthstate; I've read similar comments regarding some of the newer books re: Brandywine. |

Maps are usually not so great for Saratoga. And units (especially the Rebels) were fed in piecemeal. Makes it really hard to follow the battle. The Osprey book as the best maps, IMO. |
