14Bore, if I am not mistaken, that is a B-24 no longer considered fit for service, used as an assembly aircraft – a plane the real bombers would form around and behind to be in formation to their bombing runs. The gaudy paint job made it easier to form around.

Good use of badly-shot-up bombers.
