No, who says your games need to be based on HISTORY?? I had a number of really fun games with a buddy of mine back in the day. We both proceeded to build our favorite renaissance army and had a number of really good games. I still have never seen any confirmation that the 17th century Polish army had armed conflict with the ECW period Irish.

We even got a really great article written about us in "Twin Cities" magazine, now defunct I believe.

Heck no. I've got more ASL scenarios alone then I can play out in my lifetime.
