Latest analysis of all the archaeological finds, plotting them by ammunition type and field discovered in goes a long way, in my opinion, to restore Hopton's account as an accurate description of the battle. In particular, by far the highest concentrations of both musket, pistol and carbine balls on the field can be found immediately south east of Cheriton village on the down slope of the south side of the Ridge.
