… Knights in Check

"In the 21st century, the word chivalry evokes a kind of old-fashioned male respect for women. But during the Middle Ages, the code was established for much grittier reasons.

At a time of routine military violence with massive civilian casualties, chivalry was an effort to set ground rules for knightly behavior. While these rules sometimes dictated generous treatment of the less-fortunate and less-powerful, they were focused mainly on protecting the interests of elites…"

What a load of typical history channel crap. Anytime I see phrases like "slaughter of Muslims" or the old reliable, example of the fourth Crusade my eyes roll back into my head.

Very much a Cliff's notes or Readers Digest look at Chivalry.

The lack of referencing the christian ideal of Grace, the progenitor of Chivalry, makes this a pretty useless article.

On the other hand you also have to acknowledge that even the supposed author of the chivalric tale Le Morte d'Arthur, Thomas Mallory, was allegedly a knight imprisoned for multiple crimes including rape.

And that was in the supposedly 'civilised' 15th century! :)

Would love to take her class it is easy to see which agendas she backs.

Would be totally fun.

Absolutely no citation for "massive civilian casualties", biased claims "he's a(n) hired thug" [sic], and it goes downhill from there.

Mithmee, I am not sure if having to sit and listen to her lies would be all that much fun – countering her and asking her to please provide valid evidence would be worth a laugh.

The thing is, students in high school learn essentially nothing, those who like history turn to the History Channel and get garbage like this (just look at how PC and agenda motivated the History Channel home page is!) and then when/if they go to post-secondary and take a class on "medieval history" and are looking forward to enjoying the content, they get dumped on with this pack of half-truths, outright lies and deception.

And we sometimes wonder why there are not that many young people into historical wargaming?!

No wonder they go for 40k and fantasy …

Trust me it would be fun, since I would be 180 degrees from her and I know the history.

What is your problem?
Knights were just the top level of mafioso armed bully boys.
The church made them develop an idea of 'chivalry' to try and control their baser instincts when they had to be 'legitimised' as rulers of nascent countries.
What do you think they were?
Disney characters?
The whole basis of feudalism after the breakdown of the Roman Empire in the west is a protection racket: 'we won't murder everybody if you give us land and food and we'll protect you from our cousins who are a ****ing sight worse than us'.
I think she under sells the position.

I hope Gwydion is just being sarcastic …
