In Viet Nam, enterprising Vietnamese would go thru our trash and pluck out anything useful. Quite a lot, actually. Tires were treasured because we would toss them before their time, so there would be quite a lot of rubber left. They would cut out an oblong shape, run cut up inner tubes as straps into cuts in the sole part and, viola! Sandals. They would then sell them back to us for a couple of bucks. I had a pair, but because of the curve and my big feet they made my toes uncomfortable. However, a lot of G.I.'s did wear them. June '69 to June '79 |
