Of course, technically he doesn't have to because they took down the mast prior to battle. A ramming collision with it up could snap it clean off, toppling it onto the deck crew, or even shatter the keel. Personally, I think galleys always look better with a mast – to give the model height – but, it's historically a load of rubbish and I do it purely for the aesthetic ( a big dollop of artistic license). Mine (1:600 Xyston models): The collection:

Another battle, a close up of a 10. A converted Xyston heptereme (heightened with more bow and stern added – see red heptereme behind it for original model). With 1:600 you can do catapults and deck crew. Beads, bottom to top, crew quality, squadron, flagship – no long rosters in my games:
