Now in to the second week of a three week trip across Spain and Portugal, I have grabbed some time to put together a post looking at our first three days covering the Corunna retreat of Sir John Moore.
This area of Spain offers dramatic changes in scenery, moving from the Galician mountains onto the plains of Leon and when referring to some of the accounts of those who took part in the campaign, really helps bring the sites to life.

Well done. I would thoroughly support doing your own tour – it's much more satisfying since the various 200th anniversaries as far more sites now have memorials and even museums. I've been visiting Peninsular War sites for over 30 years and it never ceases to appeal. Just back from a mini-tour (actually a holiday with the OH!) where we visited the "Saltador Bridge" – last major obstacle in Soult's chaotic rout from Porto. Amazing location but seriously remote even by my own standards. |

Excellent stuff as always Jonathan. The Corunna museum is well hidden, eclectic, but well worth the effort. We visited Sir John in winter and it was a sad place. Best wishes, Chris |

Fabulous and envious Johnathon, what a cracker of a blog post! I do like to walk the battlefields, as ex-army and professional surveyor I can get a feel for a battlefield when I walk it, particularly with first hand accounts and battlefield reports, I have Penisula battlefield sites on the one day list. Most vivid. Thank you. And I have learnt that the Spanish term for grapeshot is 'ballas de pollada'- drawing on the image of a clutch of hens' eggs, which doesn't translate easily. (G**gle renders it as: 'cock balls'- which I fancy won't make it onto the page intact) [EDIT: Well, so far so good] |
