" Back when I was younger (1970's) one of my favorite books was the National Geographic History of the American Revolution. It was not the text that grabbed me. It was a quiant series about a family visiting battle fields at the correct time of year as a fun family outing. Something about the father in a coat and tie struck me as off. No it was the wonderful battle maps that still to this day hold my fascination. These were bird eye views of the battlefield with soldiers fighting it out. Incredibly detailed, they made the complicated actions understandable. They also made me run to the local hobby story to buy boxes of Airfix soldiers and try and fight out these encounters. These were one of the things which set me on my life long hobby of miniature wargaming…."

I have a copy. Hadn't seen the American rev maps before. I did grow up seeing the Ace ones though. I loved them! Still have that book too. They made a book with just those Ace maps in it.

Thanks

John

Nice! During a bad time in high school, I used to spend a lot of time in the library. I found the American Heritage Civil War book and would spend hours studying those maps.
Fond memories.

I still have the National Geographic book from when I was a boy. I heard an American Heritage book Birth of a Nation has similar panoramas of AWI battles. Never seen it though.

The American Heritage Picture History of the Civil War has the panoramic maps to which the OP referred. But neither the American Heritage Book of the American Revolution or the American Heritage History of the American Revolution has those very nice panoramic maps. I have copies of all three.

'The Golden Book of the American Civil War- adapted for young readers from the American Heritage Picture Book', etc. was my way into the ACW (fresh from a viewing of 'How The West Was Won'- "But this is Captain Rawlins!").

The panoramic views are not as impressionistic and, it seemed to me, more gory than the paintings in the Nat. Geographic books- which I think are seen as if from a greater distance (height?).

Glad you like it too my friend!.
