I recently read a very interesting book on the use of methamphetamine Pervitin by the nazis. The author suggests that much of the nazi success in the early war was a result of the troops keeping active due to the drug. 3 days through the Argonne Forest without sleep gave them a distinct advantage over the Allies. link Now the PBS series, Secrets of the Dead is doing an episode on this.
