You were asked – TMP link In cinema, what film or television production best captures your view of how mass combat in classical times was fought? (Let's leave aside gladiatorial, small-scale mana a mano skirmishing.) 29% said "Alexander (2004)" 19% said "Spartacus" 8% said "Rome" |

Perhaps the most realistic battle scene in film history is Zama in Scipio Africanus (1937). Too realistic to watch if you like Elephants. ihffilm.com/22789.html |

Everybody seems to recall the opening scene from HBO's Rome with Voronius and Pullo fighting the Gauls, but nobody's suggested the Battle of Phillipi scenes from Cesare's struggle with Pompey. For me it again show's the Roman formation in fighting as well as the sheer shock and brutality of what it must have been like to be on the receiving end or even taking part in the Roman "Meat Grinder". It also illustrates how random it could be with blades coming at you from all angles and very often you probably never knew who delivered the fatal blow! YouTube link High point for HBO. |
