I am painting some 28mm Foundry Imperial Romans and would like to use them in a Civil War scenario. As of now my minis are based on individual bases. I am looking for a simple set of rules that can be used for solo gaming. I enjoyed WAB but don't think it's the best set of rules for Romans. I was thinking about "To the Strongest" but I am not sure how many figures I would need in a unit, perhaps 2 bases of 6 figures or 1 base of 12? I have a 6'x4' table so I need suggestions on rules and units sizes. Any suggestions on TTS or other rules would be welcome. Thanks

Have you heard of the SPQR rules coming out from Warlord soon? It sounds like its capable of smaller games but not sure about the solo part.

Hi Pat,

You can use any number of miniatures to represent a unit. With your 6' table, I'd suggest a 15cm grid and units of 12 foot minis as you suggest, or perhaps 6 cavalry. It'll be fine. :-)

I use Hail Caesar for my 28mm solo play. I have Late Imperial Romans, Republican Romans, and Seleucids. I base the Roman infantry on sabot bases 6 x 2 (120mm x 40mm). Cavalry 5 x 1 (125mm X 50mm). Hail Caesar game mechanics work real well for me in solo play. Seleucid phalangites I have on a 6 x 4 (120mm x 80mm) sabot base

I have never played To the Strongest, but have heard and read all good things about it. Not sure how it works for solo play. I am thinking about giving it a try at some point.

TtS! and solo play- it works very well- I wrote it with one eye on solo play (I wasn't sure, at the time, whether anyone would want to play with me! ;-) ).

As with Hail Caesar, there's a good deal of uncertainty about whether stuff will move, or not, but in the case of TtS! this uncertainty is on a unit-by-unit basis so the card play helps to build the narrative of the battle.
