I've been reading about this in more detail in Barbara Tuchman's "The Zimmerman Telegram." It's obviously a much more complicated story. Those interested in what-if scenarios should find it interesting that one of Germany's ploys to keep the U.S. out of the European war was to entice Japan to change its allegiance to the Central Powers and then aid Mexico in a war against the U.S. to regain lost Mexican territory. The Panama Canal was to be Japan's reward. Ah, the possibilities! |

Yes, the Zimmer Telegram along with unrestricted submarine warfare added to the USA's decision to go to war with the Kaiser. |
