Standard pencils or mechanical pencils, not colored pencils.

Very interesting. I had not thought of it but I will now

Narratio20 Jun 2019 9:21 a.m. PST

Nope, I used to use Rotring ink pens for line work though… when I had eyes that worked.

Never even occurred to me. I'd love to know more. Does anyone have photos or descriptions to offer?

Mechanical pencil with a thin lead to fill in shading on mechanical things …. between panels, in joints and grooves, etc. Graphite also works for subtle shadows on musculature.

This "C-119" had pencil and black ball point pen both used between various panels, depending on how dark I wanted the joints to be.

The lapels and pockets on the white suits as well as the panels on the above mech were shaded with a single thin mechanical pencil line.

Always done last and always seal overtop.

Haven't but I'll probably give a curiosity try now.

Thresher0120 Jun 2019 6:20 p.m. PST

Yep, thin mechanical pencils.

I use the 0.4mm and 0.5mm ones, since they fit in the panel lines better than the larger, standard, 1.0mm ones.

Thinner ones can be found in "drafting" stores, or art stores, if those are still in business.

I hadn't thought of using pencils, but I will give it a try.

Just when I want to outline a freehand on a shield before painting it.
