… Take on Why Americans Fought the Civil War.

" "The premise of the Union war was that white Southerners could be redeemed; the premise of the Confederate war was that Northerners and Southerners could never again be countrymen."

IN 1861, Americans embarked upon the single bloodiest conflict in the nation's history. Nearly 160 years later, many still seek to explain the reasons for the unprecedented bloodshed of the Civil War.

The struggle has been characterized as a fight for emancipation or for the restoration of the Union. Others assert that it was a clash over "states rights" or a response to naked Northern aggression…."

Some interesting things here. Not really 'fresh', the core ideas of her thesis have long existed, but she does put emphasis on issues that are often overlooked.

Glad you enjoyed it (partially) my friend!

This was an interesting article though the item of greatest interest to me was the photograph of the 1862 Union camp. It shows a full regiment deployed in closed column of companies. I'm fairly certain that I have seen this photo before, but the version in the article is nice and sharp (as were a few of the interviewed authotr's points).

Yes, that's a great photo. I've seen it elsewhere with the regiment identified, but I don't remember what it is.

It is the 96th PA at Camp Northumberland. The picture can be found on the National Archives website.
