the m51 sherman was equipped with a modified version of the french 105mm gun fitted to the amx -30 tank
the french had their own ammunition for this gun but it could also fire nato rounds
so i assume the one fitted to the m51 could also use nato rounds
in other words the same as m68 cannon fitted to m60 tank( tank round off top of my head m456a1)

Rounds maybe but the m51 Sherman gun could not handle the recoil of the normal NATO rounds so only HE or HEAT would be useful and even then the rounds may need to be modified to use less propellant.

My understanding is that the ammunition was similar to, but not the same as that used in the AMX30's 105mm gun, and that the ammo for the M51s was manufactured in Israel. The M51 was not issued with the same ammo as tanks equipped with versions of the 105mm L7 or M68 series guns.

The length of the M51's gun was shortened as compared to that of the AMX30, and the rounds had a lower muzzle velocity. It would have had a shorter effective range than the AMX30, and the M51 apparently could not fire the APDS type rounds.

I'm guessing that it could not fire the M456 ammo due the energy generated by the propellant of the round being too great for the M51's gun.

Pretty sure it could only fire HE, HEAT, or smoke IIRC.

If we refer to their respective factory designations, the F1 gun seems to have been designed after the CN-105-57.

However, its ammunition shared the same warhead such as those used by the F1 gun of the AMX-30 (which uses longer NATO-compatible cartridges with more propellant).

Which, for the time period, was HE, HEAT and smoke.
APFSDS was introduced for AMX-30B only around 1982. It could not be fired from original CN-105-57, as it required modifications to the muzzle brake and recoil mechanism. The round used the same penetrator as used in the F1 gun, but with the smaller case. It was adopted for Austrian Kürassier around 1985.
