Surely the most colourful troops that fought during the Thirty Years War were the Imperial Croat cavalry. On the battlefield they were perhaps no match for heavier horse in a straight fight, but in scouting, plundering, and the general 'beating up of quarters' there were none better.

I have been looking forward to collecting and painting the Croats since I started this period. They are something quite exotic compared to the more regular pistol armed horsemen of Central and Northern Europe.

This unit is made up of the Wargames Foundry figures, with the addition of a TAG Croat trumpeter. They carry a banner of a shape peculiar to the Croats, made by Flags of War.

I thought they were Foundry figures. You've done a great job with them.

The Croats and the Finns are my favorite TYW units.

the king of Sweden said, " a curious sort of Christian that ignores the seventh commandment." G.A. often gave quarter when by the laws of war no quarter should be offered, but when it came to Croats, His standing orders were that no quarter should ever be given to croats.

That no quarter was to be given to the Croats is just one of the many, many things about Gustavus and the TYW in general that Walter Harte made up. Gustavus took more than a few Croats as prisoners during his campaign, notably at Burgthann 1632 where they were quite numerous and Gustavus was in command.

Thank you, @79thPA, @mghFond, @goragrad, @Shagnasty, @BigRedBat, much appreciated :D .

It is interesting that the Croats are still causing controversy all these years later. I suspect they'd like that.
