I'm going out to Gettysburg and Antietam in a couple of weeks. I know what I want to see on the battlefields (all of it, obviously) but what in the immediate and surrounding area is also of interest?

I'm traveling with "civilians" who might want to see some non-military sights.
Any suggestions on that front?

Thanks!!

Harper's Ferry, C&O Canal and Washington DC. Hershey Park for the kids.

There is a new outlet shopping center (with lots of shops not seen elsewhere outside of the big brand names…including a Getteysburg Souviner (sp?) shop that is reasonably priced). About 5 minutes away from Evergreen cemetary. When in Gettysburg, you MUST visit Gettysburg Toy Soldiers shop. John is also a wargamer and his shop certainly shows it. LOTS of hard to find painted collectors figs. There is an excellent book store one block from town center that has a few wargame titles, also. (The History Bookstore IIRC?)

Antietam is closer for me but haven't been there for some years now. I better go soon as I hear bad things about commercial interests wanting to buy up battlefield property!

Hope you and the family have an enjoyable time.

I second Harper's Ferry. Great for civilians.

Harper's Ferry is great. Try Frederick as well. The Museum of Civil War Medicine is worth the visit and you can make a quick dash to the Monocracy battlefield.

If you want a spectacular view, I would suggest a quick trip to the South Mountain Battlefield Center near Antietam. It has the "First Washington Monument" and an lighted 3-d map of the campaign. But the view from the Monument is amazing! It was worth the trip. Also in Gettysburg I would recommend dining at the Blue and the Grey pub. Fantastic food!
