I remember when I played Squad Leader all those years ago that squads had the capability of entrenching or digging foxholes which provided cover in open ground. I'm not sure how many other rule sets out there allow infantry to entrench but I thought i would have a go at making some, i think they turned out well and were quick and easy to make. My intention was to give them a low profile rather than high earthworks to help them blend better with the open ground.
You will need brown acrylic caulk, a plastic bag, plasterers tape, paint and textures such as sand.
First cut out a piece of plastic and lay strips of plasterers tape to cover.

Next mark out the size of the squad base which will use the foxhole ( I used 30mm x 30mm. 15mm squads)

I would space them further apart next time, once the caulk is applied they were too close together. The caulk is layered in a curve around the square base. I layered three beads of caulk.

Using a lolly stick, gently scrape down the sides of the bead to blend them in to what should look like mounds of soil, then place more caulk in to the base itself and roughly flatten out and sprinkle sand on to the wet caulk and leave to dry.

Leave overnight to dry. Next apply a dark earth colour, I used a watery mix of acrylic paint to flow in to the recesses to provide depth and leave to dry. Then dry brush with a lighter earth colour for highlights.

Once this is dry, cut out with scissors. I dabbed the front edges of the foxhole with PVA and applied some flock which helps the foxhole blend in to the battle mat. I hope this is useful for some of you or provides inspiration for further ideas. Here is how they look on the battlefield
