Hey, I was just watching "Dances With Wolfs" with the SWMBO and was noticing Costner's rifle. I'm far from expert on classic firearms but that looked to me to be a 1873 or later model Winchester or Remington lever action carbine. In the story, he was reassigned to the west just after the Civil War (or as they say here in the Deep South, the War of Northern Aggression). That rifle, whatever it is, looks way out of time. Can anyone set me right?

In the movie, Lt Dunbar carried a Colt 1851 Navy Pistol and a model 1860 Henry rifle.

Bingo

Still though the 1860 was not standard Army issue was it, I thought the cavalry was issued Sharps carbines?

I thought he was assigned out west at his request during the ACW. I could be miss-remembering.
What he took to the west could have been what he desired. That General (I think a General) was ready to please him when he kept the Confederates busy with his suicide attempt so the Union forces could attack.

My problem with the movie was the dime store Indians. Some movies get the look and attitude of the American Indian right, DWW is not one of them.

Its my understanding that those who could afford it purchased better weapons like the Henry.

What about Graham Greene, or, if you prefer, Edgar K. B. Montrose? (smile)

He was an officer; he could buy or acquire any firearm he wanted.

Not to beat a dead horse, but remember he was supposed to be bringing supplies to his new post, including some more rifles. He buried them to keep them from falling into the hands of the Indians and later dug them up to help his friends repel a Pawnee raid, they were all 1860 Henry rifles too.

The 12th Kentucky and 65th Illinois were both armed with 1860 Henry rifles at Franklin.

I bow to those better informed than I.

I liked Mad Magazine's satire of it;"Dunces With Wolves"(drawn by Mort Drucker),and the last panel depicting the furballs dancing as Costner and the lady are leaving and he's wondering if what he did has had any impact.

There were a wide variety of breach loaders and repeaters available during the ACW, including the Henry. Costners Character, Dunbar IIRC (not Dumb Bear lol) would have likely purchased the best weapons he could find. My only problem with the movie was Costner. I wish someone else played the part.
