I'm a little baffled by the Warlord SQOR starter army box.
The game apparently requires 20-30 figures per side but the starter box (from the Warlord news letter) contains 93 Gauls but only 17 Romans!

So is the box just a ridiculous combination of boxes they had to hand or are Romans so super human that, in this skirmish game, they can take on odds of over 5:1?

axabrax07 Jun 2019 9:46 a.m. PST

Seems like they are trying to repackage their Conquest of Gaul box with new rules?

Arabrax:
I hope not. First off, their Conquest of Gaul included Romans in segmentata armor. That's the box they should have their Marian/Caesarean Romans in.

Seondly, I would think they would need to include some auxiliary types on both sides, if you want to make it interesting. I mean, I don't see too many real historical situations where you have 4 of these guys and 3 of these and two of these etc., but if it's supposed to be a skirmish game then it will need some diversity.

I'm guessing it's just a repackaging for the miniatures that they already have, to sell them a different way. Also since this is the "Starter Set" they will sell all the auxiliary types as add on's to the basic game.

Its the Caesarian Romans apparently…

SPQR Contains:

Softback rulebook
Easy start booklet
A Roman commander on foot
8 Caesarian Romans with gladius
8 Caesarian Romans with Pilum
Caesarian Romans shields decal sheet
A Celtic commander on foot
80 Gallic Celts & Celts command
12 Celtic Archers
Celtic Warriors shields decal sheet
Bases
D6

Perhaps you are supposed to have Gallic allies as part of the Roman side?

Its seems a strange choice in numbers otherwise.

Perhaps the "rule of cool" drive their planning, as it did with Cruel Seas?

A mere 5 to 1? A true Roman fears not such paltry odds

I wonder if this is Warlords of Erehwon for Ancients?

I assume they'll put more images up because why pre-order something when you don't know what's in it? Some homeless guy in a sheet straddling a sheep is the only thing I know for certain is in this.

+ the goat botherer miniature.

Seems like the original listing may be in error, but it just seems to be confusing their customers at the moment.

"Some homeless guy in a sheet straddling a sheep"- I think you can add "itinerant" to that- he looks to be a Spartan (robes, xiphos). A nice enough mini, though, perhaps one of Saleh's?

That was my thoughts too. They are fond of recycling the Bolt Action mechanics.

I suppose he's generic enough to be whatever you want him to be.

It would have been better for him to be clean shaven or with the option of different heads. I think he's meant to be something like a haruspex and I suspect the sword is meant to be a gladius though it does look a lot like a xiphos. Either way he should probably have a knife rather than a sword.

I see they have the box contents up on the site now. I like the commander figures.

They're using the Republican guys too which is good.

A number of the figures are listed as being resin. Does that mean they were specifically designed for this game? I wonder if scale creep has set in and put these figs in the 32-35mm mark.

Damion22 Jun 2019 3:57 p.m. PST

There are some new resin Celtic cavalry which other than the round shields are nice additions. Not sure if they've used the same horse sculpts but they look similar.

The slingers appear to be recasts from the metal models.
The Gaul heroes are pretty odd though. Two appear to be fantasy barbarians, one is a stereotype druid, the last is a mounted officer who looks reasonable other than the lower leg bindings.
