I've read that this part of the Ottoman (turkish) army of the Napoleonic wars were raised and trained in the Western style, by a variety of officers from various different nations. What i can't find is any reference to them being able to form a square in the event they are threatened by cavalry. It seems the tactics used by the Ottoman were (at this time) still the 'linear tactics' from the early 1700's. Thoughts anyone? |

I cannot remember where, but I believe I read they also used something similar to an Austrian Battalionmasse. |

The Nizam were the only Ottoman infantry that had bayonets. Since they were trained in the European style, I think its logical to assume that they could form square. From what I've ready, the Janissaries formed a triple column that was two ranks deep. On the table, it would look like a double line. I don't know if they could rebel cavalry like the Austrian battalionmasse, which was much deeper. They also did not use volley fire. Each man fired at will, similar to skirmishers. |

Ottoman infantry typically entrenched on defense. On the offense they usually had an overwhelming superiority in cavalry that would keep enemy cavalry occupied. |

Just reading Piers Mackesy's "British Victory in Europe 1801". The Turks were a medieval levy that could barely advance a few hundred yards in line formation and had no modern drill or discipline. Form square????!!!! In your dreams! |

Excellent article "THE NIZAM-I CEDID ARMY UNDER SULTAN SELIM III 1789-1807" by Stanford J. Shaw Cambridge (Mass.) at PDF link Reading between the lines it is quite possible that the NIZAM-I CEDID were trained to form square… Clearly they were much better than the traditional Ottoman troops. |

Clearly they were much better than the traditional Ottoman troops… …at Western-European-Style close-order battle. However, this requires expensive training and equipment and logistics support. |
