I'm interested in one of these, and ages ago, the Proxxon model used to be the "go-to" option for many hobbyists. However, it has a number of limitations, so I'm looking for something a little more robust (the Proxxon's fence is apparently rather short and flimsy, and the height of the head is just a little under 6" in height, which can be limiting too). Would like the ability to make circles/cylinders, and more complex shapes, in addition to just cutting rectangular stock into blocks. A decent fence, and angle guides are definite must haves. Probably need measuring devices/markings too for both the tabletop X and Y axes too. So, has anyone used any of the ones shown listed on eBay? auction There's also another one produced in Europe, but the name escapes me currently, and I don't know if it is available for sale in the USA or not. It's got a hyphenated name, and 3-D tacked on at the end. Of course, perhaps I should just consider building one, but buying a decent one that can be used right out of the box might get things going a bit quicker. Thoughts? |

I would direct you away from the "Hot Wire Foam Factory Scroll Table". Their controls at the "Pro" level are nice, but the mechanics are not up-to-snuff. The bent ABS plastic base of there original design table is difficult to work with and not as stiff as needed. The fence they offer is also very low. I have much better luck with the Proxxon. The ability to set the wire at angles (and with precision) is very useful. Remember, it is much easier to increase the height of a fence then to alter many other features. |

I have a Proxxon, as well, and I can highly recommend it. It is a fantastic machine. The ability to cut circles, cylinders, cones, etc., depends upon attachments for moving the foam piece in the proper manner. These attachments exist, already, for the Proxxon -- for the models shown on e-Bay, you will have to build your own. While this is certainly possible, it is time-consuming, and demanding. I recommend searching YouTube for Proxxon Accessories, and you will find a few videos demonstrating some of the quality accessories for the Proxxon. While they will cost you, they are worthwhile, for some of them. A few are relatively easy to build yourself, such as the pin on a board, used to spin the foam, to cut circles and cones. If you want foam structures/sculptures taller than the Proxxon's wire height, you have a couple of options: cut multiple pieces, stack and glue them together, or build your own taller arm to hold the wire, as well as install a bigger power supply to provide enough voltage and amperage to heat the longer, more resistive length of cutting wire. You can use the same nicrhome cutting wire, but you will need a more powerful voltage supply to heat the longer wire. The Proxxon is proven, it has decent accessories available, and it is a great, thoroughly tested and reviewed, product. Whatever you choose, you will encounter a mild learning curve in using any hot wire cutter. Watching the videos on the Proxxon, will give you a leg up on the learning curve. Spend some energy researching it, as it will be well worth your time, no matter which cutter you go with. Cheers! PS: Cutting any foam will release toxic gases! Make sure you have a small fan blowing the fumes away from your face… Cutting vinyl, with a laser, is similar: this releases chlorine gas, which is a nerve agent, which can be absorbed through the skin, as well as inhaled. Foam cutting may not release chlorine gas, but I treat it as if it does! Better safe, than sorry… |

I don't have experience with any of the products on your Ebay link. Some look that they are comparable with the Proxxon. However, without compatibility with the excellent Shifting Sands products, I personally wouldn't bother. |
