Now that I have some aircraft (yet to be painted), I'm thinking about flight stands. My games will be simple affairs, so no specific rules (mostly home rules)… Any recommendations for flight stands? Last time I did flight stands for 1/300 aircraft was way back in the day before anyone made them commercially and mine were not that great. I don't need fancy, my altitude rules are simple, a marker (colored block) serves that purpose and no other markers or status indicators are needed on the stand. Thanks in advance for any advice you may have. |

Games Workshop do clear plastic flying bases. They have two sizes and they come with several different length rods. Litko do crystal clear stands – they would be my preferred option– a number of accessories available for these. |

I guess it depends on what you want to show on the stands wrt flight position. If you just want a plane laying flat almost all the stands will do that. If you want to show planes upright but banked to nose up or down (not too far) the ones with a ball on the stand and a flat on the plane will do. One would have to be a magnet and the other port magnetic (steel). My stands were more elaborate and could show the plane from vertical to vertical and rolled to any position. I also had a small antenna to show who was higher as opposed to representing actual heights. Although it only works on light planes the best (most detailed) I have seen are the ones for In Clouds of Glory, icog.dk Which also represent altitude accurately. I have yet to try it only because so few of us want to play that level of detail anymore. |

The thing/problem I see with the flight stands I've seen is the diameter of the rod/peg. Seems like a mighty large hole to put in the bottom of a 1/300 aircraft. I don't mind the flat look, as our games are very basic and fast playing. So the planes just need to have the look of being in the air. |

Mike, check out Armaments in Miniature. Dave has a variety of flight stands suited for different rules. Armamentsinminiature.com |

I use wooden dowels cut to the proper length & glued to a wooden stand. They are topped off by some of that blue sticky putty that they sell at office stores. Nicely holds the planes. |

I've used the Litko stands and if you use a trimmed dowel or plastic rod, the mounting hole in the plane need not be large. |

I'd either use standard, plastic "flight bases", or go with a heavier metal base, and thin piano wire. Both work well, and are less obtrusive looking. |

Thanks for all the suggestions. I now have a few avenues to investigate. |

I preferred the Corsec stands but he's out of business. It's been a while but the CY6 stands I have can get tippy and I don't feel the rod is thick enough. They work but check how your planes will balance before committing to glue. |

The clear plastic ones for X-Wing are cheaper by the dozen and come with rods that you can add to for additional height. Going by 2s, you can have heights of 2-4-6 which easily gives 3 levels of height, should be more than enough. Heck, a lot of people have so much extra X-wing stuff that your friends will probably just give them to you. These are square, so probably easier to use with games that have 45 / 90 / 180 measurements as opposed to 60 degree increments. Hope that helps. |
