This week Mr Steve and I took ourselves off up to the Welsh marches to check out some really interesting historic sites from the early to late medieval period and including the English Civil War.
In this, part one of a post covering our two days, we take a look at Offa's Dyke, Montgomery Castle and the Battle of Montgomery 1644.

Great stuff Johnathon! I prefer to walk the battlefields before I reproduce them on the table, it really helps especially if you are producing a table for a convention. Cheers Matt Hercé Salon de Guerre Mayenne, France "Walk the battlefield in the morning, wargame in the afternoon" |

Sounds like an excellent trip. I used to live in the Marches and our club, the Wyre Forest Wargamers, presented Montogomery as a demo game at the Wolverhampton show a few years ago. There is a detailed archaeological report from the Clywd- Powys Archaeology Trust, which is available on line. There is also a book from the Helion " Century Of the Soldier" series, which is worth a read. Supposedly the battle was over in around an hour, with the Royalist army completely routed; it seems an extraordinary result and not one I have been able to recreate on the tabletop! |

Thanks for your comments chaps. HS de G – I agree entirely, the hobby of historical wargaming is all about the history informing our games and what better way than to walk in the footsteps of those who did it for real. Steamingdave2 – Thank you for added thoughts. I really learn a lot more about the places we have walked when I sit down to write about them, from my own research and from comments like yours that add further still. Cheers JJ |

Well there probably is some place in England where a battle might not have been fought. But you are going to be hard pressed to find it. |
