Somehow the "with TtS!" made me think we were getting more naked female warriors. |

Very pretty. The battle as played here ended in a very decisive victory for the Gauls. Historically it was an inevitable and crushing defeat that ended Gallic power in Italy forever. I wonder if the OOB was the issue here. The Gauls were not only caught between two Roman armies, but either one of those would have nearly equaled the Gauls in numbers. This meant that the Gauls were outnumbered about two to one *and* caught between two significant Roman forces. The one advantage they had – numerical superiority in Gallic cavalry (and chariots) – is likely to have been a result of exaggeration since, for one thing, 20,000 in an army of 70,000 is massively out of proportion to armies of the day and secondly, the narrative on Polybios has this "huge" mounted force being soundly defeated by a Roman and allied Italian cavalry that we know was not of great quality, and which had lost its commander. I don't think there is any way that, with the correct forces and a sound set of rules, anyone but a military genius of the tabletop could pull off a win for the good guys here. Since I am sure the rules are fine I suspect the forces have been radically altered to create game balance. |
