Hello – There seems to be a "generation" of 25mm Minifigs sized between the currently available figures, and the "S" Range figures.

These are stockier than the "S" Range, but smaller than the ones that can be bought from Caliver at the moment.

What Range/Series are they known as? How do I describe them? I have Napoleonics I'm going to be selling, but don't want to mislead anyone who might think the figures would fit in with their collection.

Thanks.

No accepted name – I've always known them as "the intermediates". They weren't available long but as a half way house they will work ok with either S Range or the chunky ones. You can easily tell them because they look more like S Range but have codes stamped in the top of their bases like the later (current) figures rather than scratched on the underside. I suspect at the time they were just known as "Minifigs"

Minifigs are a bit like the hominid species.

There's lots of 'missing links'.

Sometimes some 'fossils' turn up.

Interested – are they being posted on eBay?

Don't forget, many of theme WERE S range, just moved into the middle range with thinner spears

Didn't the "S" range have numbers beginning with "S" ?? Earlier than the "PB" and "GP" ranges, for example ? I am aware that the PB range went from thick spear to thin spear, were remodelled to "barrel" (a mold-making error IIRC ?) and then to "proper width". All while keeping the same PB number (except for those that were changed !! Usually added on at the end of the list ….) The GP range changed from 25 to 28mm at some time, something which I was not particularly aware of until recently.

Thanks for the comments and information, everyone. I hadn't realised there were even more ranges/series than I thought.

Because the figures I've unearthed so far are based, I'm afraid I can't see the codes.

As I haven't used the figures for at least 30 years, I'm still coming across them at the back of drawers and cupboards. So I don't know how many I'll end up with.

I've already based up 20 infantry as a regiment of teenage "Cadets", with figures from the larger current range as taller adult Officers. I was slightly uneasy about the ethics of gaming sending young teenagers into battle but, in the end, accepted it wasn't real life.

BillyNM – I intend to put them on ebay once I know exactly what I have. In the meantime, if you're interested, I can email photos of a few samples to see if it is the series/range you might want. I could put a current Minifig in the photos to give you an idea of the comparative size.

Seeing all the figures I have and the thousands (?) in the Minifig catalogue, and now learning about various other series, I can't but admire the incredible output of the sculptor (I've a vague memory he was called Dick Higgs – or something like that). He must have sculpted several figures every day of his life!

Thanks again.

I've just come across Vintagewargamingfigures.info that has a good article on the history of Miniature Figurines and their ranges
