I was;t sure where to post this…..I guess a computer is a tool….of sorts! I've splashed out a fee PDF scenraios and they are written for other rule sets so I need to convert the OOBs etc. I'd also like to be able t extract pages, copy test and do a whole host of things. I could of course just sit and type out the bits I need but it would be so much easier just to make an edited version. So my question is, can anyone recommend a PDF editor? I find it hard to find the good software from the junk nowadays/ I don;t mind paying a little for it, but don't want to spend a fortune. Any suggestions welcome! |

PDF isn't really designed to be editable. It can be modified if you know what you're doing (I do so professionally), but it's not for the uninitiated. Also note that not all documents are constructed in the same way and a technique which works well to take apart content for one may fail utterly on another. There are some PDF "editing" tools available; these tend to be serious business programs and the cost reflects this. Functionality of such is *nothing* like a common word processor. Having said that, most PDF viewers (Acrobat, Edge & Foxit, for sure) will allow you to select text and copy it to the clipboard – if the document is structured in a way which permits this. Addendum: if you're dead set on messing with PDFs then muPDF (from Artifex software) is a very handy command-line tool. You can use it to extract bitmaps, fonts &c. Hugh |

You can also try to highlight and copy PDF text to a regular document file in your own word processing software. Jim |

Some programs also allow saving the PDF as a Word doc and you could edit from there but formatting can get very wonky. |

Just highlight, copy and paste the text into a word processor. |

pdfescape.com is a free pdf editor on the internet. You don't have to download anything. Just upload your document, and you can write on it, paste things on it, redact it, etc. Internet searches for "merge pdf" and "split pdf" will lead you to various editors that do those things. If it makes business sense, the Adobe Acrobat pdf editor is about $156 USD per year. |

You can get a free trial of any of the Adobe stuff. |

Likewise there are several online converters which can provide you with DOC's, ePubs etc. Screen grabs, dropped into a word doc can also work. |

I have had great success with: wps.com/pdf-to-word/?__c=1 You can download it for free, but it only handles a pdf up to five pages long. I used that as a trial. The trial worked so I went ahead and bought the real version. I absolutely love it. Occasionally it screws up formatting, but only slightly. I have been able to make it look pretty darn good when that does happen. It is easy to use. I am not a software expert by any stretch of the imagination. It has very good reviews. I was very suspicious as it is a program that was developed in China. However, I was not able to find anything on the internet that indicated any security risk. The suggestion to highlight copy and paste into a word processor has never worked for me with charts and tables. For pure text it is fine. Even for text with images, but not table or charts in my experience. Tom |

I should have added for clarity that the version of wps I refer to above that you pay for has no page limitation. Tom |

pdfxviewer allows you to modify a pdf by adding a layer on top of the original. so you'd blank out the existing with a white text box that you'd then type into. it's a free portable programme. it increases the size of the pdf file because of the layering. |
