My latest blog entry covers a refight of the battle of Denmark Strait. For those that don't know a load of us naval wargamers are refighting the battle this weekend around the world using a variety of rules, with the aim being to compare notes and to see how the different sets played out using the same scenario. I fought out the battle last night using my "Find, Fix and Strike" rules. A hard fought action which left both German ships sunk (the Germans claiming to have scuttled Bismarck) and Hood seriously damaged but still in the fight….. link |

That seems to be a feature of Blogspot. It comes up as potentially odd for some, not for others. Perhaps a symptom of not being HTTPS? |

Interesting to see which comes closest to the historical result – I got a near perfect repeat of the result using Fletcher Pratt, albeit with a modification to introduce critical hits. FP also delivered a near perfect repeat of the showdown with KGV and Rodney except they just managed to sink Bismarck before having to haul off. Vian's attack did not match the historical result but I blame my rule modifications for night fighting (didn't stick with FP and do it in the dark with torches!). The Swordfish strike also was a perfect* history match – again FP with some added Wings of War mechanics – one hit near the stern while turning to port and a D6 throw giving a jammed rudder. Only one aircraft damaged by flak. (* Half the swordfish still had their torpedoes when we ran out of time). |

I did the same with GQ2 years ago. |

Denmark Strait is one of my 'go to' scenarios to test a new set of rules; I've played it in "Battelstations! Battlestations!", "Victory at Sea" and "GQ1". Usually the British win but Hood gets a mauling, though when I played with B!B! we had the result nearest to history: TMP link That said, GQ gave the best game – I really like B!B! and it's really great for fleet actions, but lacks flavour for smaller engagements. I Have only played this scenario once. my "kreigsmarine fan" mate said it was unfair to his beloved kreigsmarine so he played the british using GQ1 Hood blew up with a magazine hit on Bismark's first round…. and game ended at that. |

For smaller games of just a few ships using the GQ rules (GQ1 and/or GQ2), I house-ruled the damage effects to the vessels from hits, so they don't get pounded into oblivion so quickly. Essentially, each "hit" did 1/2 normal damage. You can accomplish that by doubling the damage points, or halving the damage done by each salvo. Worked well for our games of 2 on 2 capital ships. |
