I admit that I didn't plan it this way, but I am running a game set during the Vietnam War this weekend. Players will be US military and CIA personnel on a dangerous mission.

Yes, alongside those who wore the uniform for their country, let us remember those who did not wear the uniform for their country.

Thanks for drawing this to our attention; over here we're not very aware of Memorial Day.

Yes, and many of those served in the military before they went into that type of "work". Regardless, we should remember all those Stars on the Wall at the CIA HQ …

over here we're not very aware of Memorial Day.
Glad to share. As in many wars the US, UK, etc. served side-by-side.

We had Armed Forces Day in the US on May 18th.

On 27 May, Memorial Day and of course Veterans' Day on 11 Nov. Which is observed in the UK, etc. But labelled differently in other nations.

11 November was called Armistice Day, the day the fighting stopped in Europe in 1918.

Yes, I remember my mother, etc. still calling Memorial Day – Decoration Day. Which started shortly after the ACW. [My Mom was not in the ACW !]

And she also called Veteran's Day – Armistice Day.

The 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month, 1918.

I am ashamed. Totally. I had to go to Wiki as I have seriously never heard of Memorial Day. VE Day, VJ Day, Armistice Day, we have those this side of the pond.

We are about to do D Day, we will again do Market Garden. Mine will be Liberation of Paris, however much the history has been romanticised.

I am so ashamed that I do not even know the significance of the date! OK Wiki could tell me. Appotommatox? (not even sure of the spelling) I will guess end of ACW…

raylev326 May 2019 1:26 p.m. PST

Well…..actually, Appomattox was not the end of the ACW; that was when Robert E. Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia.

Johnston and his Army fought on until he surrendered to Sherman on April 26 after disobeying Jefferson Davis' order to fight on.

Brig. Gen. Stand Watie, a Native American who served as a Confederate general, was the last Confederate general to surrender on June 23rd.

Raylev3 … +1

Sadly … even many in the USA don't know much about our ACW. Or the what and why, etc., of Memorial Day … Etc., etc. … it's just a day off for many. No mail, schools and banks are closed.

General John A. Logan, the commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, established May 30th as Decoration Day. A day to remember those who fell fighting for the Union. In the South they had Memorial Day on April 29th. In 1971 the date for both was changed to the last Monday in May, and established to honor all Americans who fell in combat. the name was set as Memorial Day and the date close to Decoration Day to show both sides are now Americans.

Most civilians, (and with the lack of civics taught in school, I don't hold them responsible), think of memorial day and veterans day as interchangeable.

Pathetically, I watched misinformed laborers at my place of employment display mannequins in an odd collection of military equipment. The purpose for this display remains a mystery to me, but it was an excellent exhibit of jingoistic patriotism. I do wonder what they have planned for Black History Month though.

Again, just another case of how poorly informed many are …
